Banque Libano-Française (BLF) is a Lebanese bank holding number 10 on Banque du Liban List of Banks. It has a total of 60 branches and more than 176 ATMs, the second largest network of ATMs in Lebanon in 2018.

The Bank covers the following services: commercial banking, investment banking, retail banking, private banking, treasury and capital markets and correspondent banking.

BLF is also an active member of the Association of Banks in Lebanon.

History[edit]

  • Banque Libano-Française (BLF) was created in 1930 as a branch of the French bank, Compagnie Algérienne.
  • In 1967, BLF became a bank established under the Lebanese law, with 70% French shareholding.
  • In 1970, Banque Indosuez acquired a 5% direct interest in the Bank capital.
  • In 1973, Banque Indosuez increased its stake to 20% through a partial acquisition of the shares of Compagnie Française de Crédit et de Banque (former Compagnie Algérienne de Crédit et de Banque), which became known as Parthena Investment.
  • In 1992, Banque Indosuez increased its shareholding in Banque Libano-Française to 51%.
  • In 1999, BLF acquired 100% of Crédit Agricole Indosuez Liban (CAIL), a financial institution specialized in securities brokerage and portfolio management.
  • In 2004, Crédit Agricole Group decided to reduce its exposure in Lebanon, in anticipation of the implementation of Basle II. Therefore, Calyon (former Crédit Agricole Indosuez) reduced its participation in the Bank to 9%.
  • In 2006, BLF finalized the acquisition of 78.3% of Banque SBA shares, established in France (Paris) with a financial subsidiary in Geneva known as LF Finance (Switzerland) SA and a branch in Cyprus (Limassol).
  • In 2009, BLF obtained an official license from the UAE Central Bank to establish a Representative Office in Abu Dhabi.
  • In 2012, the Bank reinforced its operations in the MENA region by opening a Representative Office in Lagos, Nigeria and a branch in Baghdad, Iraq.
  • On September 1, 2014, Farid Raphaël, founder of Banque Libano-Française and its Chairman General Manager from 1979, passed away.
  • On September 15, 2014, Walid Raphaël was elected by the Board of Directors as Chairman General Manager of the Bank.
  • In 2015, the Bank teamed up with Allianz SNA to launch 5 new non-life insurance plans to help protect its clients against various risks.
  • In January 2016, BLF launched the international architecture competition to build its new headquarters.
  • In July 2016, it announced Norwegian-American studio Snøhetta as the winner of the competition, selected by the International Jury.
  • In 2017, the Bank expanded its local network to 58 branches and more than 172 ATMs.
  • In 2018, BLF opened two new branches in Kfarhbab and Tyre-Hoche, bringing the number of its local branches to 60.

The Lebanese Movie Awards known as The LMAs, is an award ceremony recognizing the best Lebanese & International cinematic achievements in the filmmaking industry. The LMAs honors these films both in their artistic and technical aspects with categories including Best Lebanese Motion Picture, Best Directing, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, among others.

The award was first presented in 2014, at Vox Cinemas, before finally moving in 2018 to The Casino Du Liban, a lush and luxurious venue hosting the ceremony so far. The LMAs is the first and only award ceremony for film in Lebanon.

The 5th edition of the LMAs was held on the 17th of April at The Casino Du Liban, with 7 films competing in major categories, The Insult by Ziad Doueiri came out as the big winner with 4 awards including Best Picture. Mahbass took home two awards for Best Soundtrack and Best Costume Design and Tramontane picked up the award for Best Director.

Nomination[edit]

The nominees were announced Live on Monday January 15, 2018, on MTV Lebanon, by the president and founder Emilio Eid.

The nominees included a total of 7 films, competing for 10 categories among which Best Picture, Best Lebanese Director, Best Ensemble Cast and more. This year a new category was added to honor the achievement of costume designers under the title of Best Wardrobe. For the sixth edition new categories will be added including Best Independent Short & Best Documentary Feature

Jury Members are carefully selected each year, as the LMA cares to keep a track record of prestigious and esteemed figures voting for the nominated films. Each jury member would receive his voting ballot and will have a period of time to cast his votes and return his ballot. All jury members votes are kept confidential at all times.

Here's a few of the jury we've had across the years: Raya Abirached, Elias Doummar, Marie-There Maalouf, Amin Dora, Jassmina Najjar, Mahmoud Hojeij, Georges Khabbaz, Wissam Breidy as well as many others.

Venues[edit]

For the first two years, the awards were presented at Vox Cinema Lebanese, before eventually moving to the prestigious downtown location, at Beirut Souks Cinemacity, which hosted the award ceremony for the third and fourth edition.

The awards moved to the Casino Du Liban, in Jounieh which currently hosts the awards for future editions.

Cinematic Achievement Award[edit]

The cinematic achievement award is awarded to a special recipient who has worked and pushed the boundaries of the Lebanese film industry and who has made a notable contribution to its international recognition. The first recipient was Georges Khabbaz, who has worked on films such as Ghadi, Void and Under The Bombs. The recipient name would only be announced a few days before the ceremony.
